Budget Update

The district presented their proposed budget for next year last night at a community meeting. As ESSER funds are ending this year (ESSER is federal money given to schools at the height of COVID), the focus was on moving positions that are funded via ESSER to our normal school funding sources. This means that there are very few new positions that are being added, and that are being eliminated, mostly vacant positions. At the meeting last night, Almi named a commitment to student-facing positions over administrative positions. You’ll see from the additions that our advocacy at budget cycles and through union processes over the past few years is paying off. Our voice matters in creating ideal learning conditions for our students. The additions focus on restorative justice, dire special education needs at CHS, and increasing our graduation rates. The full presentation is available on this web page.

  • Additions
    • Three deans (one at each middle school)
    • Three special education teachers and an outreach worker at CHS
    • One coordinator for EL compliance.
  • Reductions
    • One tech coach at the elementary level
    • Two paraprofessional and 2 teaching positions at the CAMS (all vacant)
    • One school psychologist
    • Four translator positions district wide (all vacant)
    • One teaching position at CVLA.

We will talk more about what we think of the budget and CTU’s budget platform at our 10 minute meetings on March 12th.
