To Apply for Sick Bank please email ctu1340sickbank@gmail.com for the form.
The Basics
- The Sick Bank provides additional paid sick leave to members with status who have used up all of their own personal leave time (sick days, personal days, and vacation days if applicable). It must be used for a serious illness or injury; it cannot be accessed if you run out of regular sick days.
- Members are eligible after three years of service (so starting your fourth year in the district).
- Sick bank now operates on an opt out basis. All members will receive a form when they become eligible for the sick bank; if you don’t complete the form, opting out, you are automatically enrolled.
- Sick bank now relies on an annual donation of one day per year.
- You can now use the sick bank to cover your own medical needs and tending to the medical needs of an immediate family member as defined by FMLA. This important change was brought to negotiations in 2024, and our members’ hard work won us this right. You can use up to 35 days to care for a family member in any given school year, and up to 70 days total to care for a family member. You can use up to 184 days to care for yourself.
- If you are enrolled in the sick bank and have a qualifying situation, you have to apply to use the sick bank. Talk with your building rep about the process.
- Unit A members are no longer required to go an additional ten days without pay before using sick day benefits. This important change was brought to negotiations in 2024, and our members’ hard work won us this change.
- A joint CTU-CPS board will vote on your sick bank application. You need a 3-1 or 4-0 vote to be awarded the time. The board has to make decisions using the following two criteria:
- Adequate medical evidence
- Prior utilization of all accrued sick and personal leave
Sick Day Buy Back (retiring members only)
If you are retiring, please make sure to submit the sell back form to HR. This way you will be able to sell back the maximum days, and donate any remainder to the sick bank. Thank you for supporting your colleagues!
